HOW TO BEAT AN EXERCISE PLATEAU

Our bodies like to be constantly challenged…

Been smashing it in the gym but all of a sudden your results have plateaued? It’s not uncommon for this to happen. Our bodies like to be constantly challenged. A particular exercise routine will help you lose weight or gain strength for a certain period of time, and then your body changes and adapts, making progress seem harder to gain.

If you’ve hit an exercise plateau, here are some ways to reignite your progress:

  1. Progressive overload – In order to progress our results, we also need to progress our exercise regimen. Typically this is done by either increasing weights, sets/reps or timing of your exercises. If you need help with adjusting your workout programme, reach out to a qualified personal trainer.
  2. Change it up – Trying a new style of workout and presenting your body with a new challenge can help to progress your results. E.g. If you’re typically doing cardio, try adding in some cardio, or if you’re a regular walker, maybe add in some pilates or yoga.
  3. Consider your diet – often people try to fix plateaus with exercise, however, it is a combination of diet and exercise that contributes to weight loss. Seek nutritional advice from a qualified Nutritionist to help assess how your diet may be impacting your results.
